P.C. Las Vegas

Last week Crossroads featured a photo of the humongous statue of V.I. Lenin that stands in front of Red Square, a restaurant at Las Vegas' new Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

Today an observant Crossroads reader called to tell me that the Lenin statue no longer has a head. Yes, comrades, the towering figure was given a Soviet haircut.

Employees and patrons of the Russian-themed Red Square said that during the two weeks the statue was up, head and all, people were banging on the windows, giving customers what is commonly known as "the rude hand gesture," yelling obscenities and generally harassing everybody connected with Red Square for displaying what they felt was pinko art.

According to Mandalay Bay director of public relations and promotions, Bill Doak, the only way keep the peace was to lop its head off. "We wanted to make sure that people believed we weren't glorifying communism," Doak said. "We've brought the statue up to more contemporary times, with the statue depicted as it is in other countries, headless."

The red's head now rests inside the restaurant where, in its disembodied state, nobody seems to mind it. I just hope this particular pack of protesters stays the heck out of Florence. Michaelangelo's "David" might fare even worse than poor old Lenin.
