Resorts incorporate green trees in wedding plans


Couples getting married can celebrate a new life by planting a tree in Costa Rica or a palm in Nevis in yet another going-green trend.

In Costa Rica, the Green Wedding package at the Hilton Papagayo Resort in Guanacaste and the Doubletree Resort by Hilton in Puntarenas centers on a tree.

The couple plants the sapling, and next to it a stone marker displays their names and wedding date. Each year on their anniversary, the couple receives a leaf of the tree and a photo to mark its growth.

The Green Wedding package features the ceremony; an English-speaking justice of the peace; bride's bouquet and groom's boutonniere; a DJ; wine and hors d'oeuvres for up to 20 guests at the Hilton Papagayo or dinner for up to 20 at the Hilton Puntarenas; and a private dinner for the couple.

The package as described is available at both properties through Dec. 31. The cost, $3,000 at the Papagayo and $2,500 at the Puntarenas, are in addition to the room rates.

In Nevis, honeymooners get their chance to enhance the environment and commemorate their union by planting a coconut palm on the grounds, near the resort's Avenue of the Palms.

The Nisbet Plantation's wedding package for 2009 costs $1,595 and includes a choice of Plantation venue with decor; a pre-wedding massage for bride and groom; services of a wedding coordinator and photographer; the marriage license, registration and minister's fees, plus transportation to and from official visits as necessary; a wedding cake; a bottle of French champagne; and a bridal bouquet.

The resort also offers a honeymoon plan, priced from $5,324 from Jan. 3 through March 31. The rate covers six nights in one of the Plantation's 36 cottages, a champagne breakfast in bed on the first morning, daily breakfasts at the beachside Coconuts restaurant, a gourmet dinner on the beach, five dinners at Nisbet Plantation's Great House and daily afternoon tea.

Also on the agenda are a sailing cruise, lunch at Pinney's Beach Bar and Restaurants (taxi service included, a two-day car rental and two massages at the Palms Spa.
