Mexico has assigned 100 additional federal police officers to the Mexico City Airport in response to a rise in assaults against travelers who exchanged money inside the airport, according to published reports.
A federal police official told the Associated Press that at least 18 travelers who exchanged money inside the airport were followed outside and robbed.
At least five of the victims have been foreigners, including a French scientist who was killed after resisting the assailants who intercepted his car.
The police official said the reinforcement brings to 500 the number of federal officers patrolling the airport.
