Travel Weekly's Cruise E-letter: July 5, 2005

THE GOLDEN PRINCESS will sail its first West Coast cruises in 2007 when it launches three 10-day Mexican Riviera voyages from San Francisco. The ship joins two other Princess Cruises vessels on the West Coast: The Diamond Princess, which cruises weekly to Mexico from Los Angeles, and the Island Princess, which offers a holiday sailing from L.A. on Dec. 20.

COMINGS AND GOINGS: Peter Thomson was named vice president and COO of Cruise Holidays, replacing Kevin Weisner, who joined as vice president less than six months ago (Weisner replaced Charlie Dunwoody, who is now at Holland America Line). Thomson most recently was multinational client general manager for American Express in Wilmington, Del. At Silversea Cruises, meanwhile, senior vice president of worldwide marketing and communications Barbara Muckermann resigned due to personal and family commitments.

CRUISES INC. and CRUISEONE rolled out loyalty programs last week. Cruises Inc. Rewards and CruiseOne Rewards enables loyalty members to earn credits on future cruises with each purchase from a Cruises Inc. or CruiseOne agent or earn and spend credit from purchases with retailers like Pottery Barn, Sports Authority and Blockbuster.

SEABOURN'S ENTIRE FLEET all three of its ships are headed for drydock refurbishments by the end of the year. The line is installing DVD players and flat-screen TVs in the cabins and improving its indoor/outdoor Veranda Cafe, which acts as the ships breakfast and lunch spot as well as its casual-dining venue.

DEVILS ON THE DEEP BLUE SEA, the new book by Kristoffer Garin about The Dreams, Schemes and Showdowns that Built America's Cruise-Ship Empires (the tagline of the book) will likely make some waves in the cruise industry, but will it generate any turbulence beyond? The books only been on the shelf for a week, so its too soon to tell. But one cruise line executive who has read the book said: It will be interesting to those involved in the industry but probably not beyond. And people within the industry are going to react very differently to it.
