Travel Weekly's Hawaii E-letter: April 16, 2007

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE plans to reposition the Pride of Hawaii to Europe, effective February 2008. The vessel is the largest (2,466 passengers) and newest (in service since June 2006) of the cruise line's three interisland cruise ships. The repositioning is designed to reduce capacity and increase profitability in Hawaii. NCL lost $116 million in the fourth quarter of 2006, largely due to unprofitable Hawaii operations. NCL called the move temporary, but did not provide a timetable for the ship's return to Hawaiian waters.

THE WYLAND WAIKIKI, originally slated to be managed by Hilton under the Doubletree brand, will instead be managed by Outrigger Enterprises. The 400-plus-unit property is set to reopen this month following a multimillion dollar remodel. The Wyland Waikiki will operate as its own brand within the Outrigger portfolio. The hotel offers a central, off-beach location, with many rooms including a microwave and sink.

THE HILTON WAIKIKI PRINCE KUHIO has officially joined the Hilton family. The rebranding follows a $65 million renovation that included a remake of rooms, lobby, restaurant, pool deck, business center and fitness center. The hotel, situated on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki, is one block from the beach and is within walking distance of central Waikiki. The property is operated by Stanford Hotels Corp. under a franchise license agreement with Hilton Hotels Corp.

A LANDSLIDE AT WAIMEA BAY, on Oahu's North Shore, will take four to five months to repair. The landslide has caused a partial closure of the two-lane road that follows the Oahu coastline. For the immediate future, visitors headed to the North Shore should anticipate traffic-related delays.

THE POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER is hosting its 15th Annual World Fireknife Championships from May 16 to 19 that will, for the first time, include female competitors and tandem teams.
