Travel Weekly's Hawaii E-letter: Aug. 6, 2007

STARWOOD HOTELS & RESORTS has withdrawn from talks concerning its participation in developing the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu's North Shore. The project, being fought by a significant number of North Shore residents, involves a number of hotels and timeshare properties. Zoning approvals for the project were granted in the mid-1980s. Since that time ,very little development has taken place, with the resort currently including a single hotel and several condominiums, two golf courses, stables and a tennis center.

HAWAII'S JULY VISITOR COUNT from the mainland U.S. fell 2%. Japanese numbers showed their first monthly increase, 4.2%, in two years. Oahu and Maui saw small decreases, with Kauai and the island of Hawaii reporting larger declines. International arrivals overall are up, the result of a weak dollar and pent-up demand.

THE FAIRMONT ORCHID AT MAUNA LANI, built in 1990 on the Big Island's Kohala Coast, is on the market. Boston-based Westbrook Partners bought the upscale, 540-room hotel in 2005 for $250 million, including 32 acres of oceanfront land. The property has been sold twice in the past five years.

TRAVELWORM, a vacation packager, is offering a commissionable, promotional rate of $592, per person double, including Los Angeles or San Francisco departures and a three-night stay at the oceanfront Castle Kona Reef Hotel condo apartments, located just to the south of historic Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. Call (888) 700-8342 or visit www.travelworm.com.

KAHALA HOTEL & RESORTS is offering a nightly rate of $189 to IATA member travel agents during the month of October. The offer is for up to two nights and includes best-of-house accommodations at time of check-in and includes breakfast for one. Call (800) 367-2525; an IATA identification number is required.

THE WAILEA BEACH MARRIOTT has named Sharon Klaschka director of sales and marketing. The 546-room Maui property has recently completed a property-wide upgrade.
