HAPPENINGS
" Hilo Ocean Adventures has opened the Big Island's Hilo
and Hamakua coasts to a new adventure activity aboard a rigid
aluminum inflatable vessel (RAIV). The three-hour excursion departs
Hilo and makes its way along the east coast to Laupahoehoe, a route
that's particularly scenic because of the many waterfalls and
towering Mauna Kea in the background. Marine life, including
dolphins and sea turtles, are seen all year, with humpback whales
seen November through mid-May. The RAIV can carry up to 15
passengers. Tours are $89 per person for the three-hour waterfall
journey and $39 for the seasonal, two-hour whale watch. Call (808)
756-4100.
" Hawaii Forest & Trail has added a visit to an
ancient agricultural terrace, which it has helped to restore to
taro production, to its Kohala Waterfalls Adventure. The hiking
adventure, on a trail suitable for novice hikers, includes a swim
in a cool mountain stream. Visit www.hawaii-forest.com.
