HAWAII SUPERFERRY SERVICE from Honolulu to Kauai will
resume Sept. 26, while Honolulu-Maui service remains suspended
pending the outcome of a judicial review of a lawsuit demanding a
full environmental impact statement (EIS) of the service. An EIS
was not required in a prior judicial ruling. The state of Hawaii
has invested $40 million in harbor upgrades to accommodate the new
service, which started daily runs between Honolulu and Maui and
Kauai in mid-August.
AIRLINES saw a dramatic increase in losses for the second
quarter of 2007, the result of the ongoing interisland fare war and
rising fuel costs. Losses for the quarter were $18.8 million
compared to a $2.8 million loss reported in the second quarter of
2006. Carrier losses in Hawaii have increased since Go! Airlines
started interisland service in June 2006.
