EDUCATION UPDATE: The Travel Institute and the Adventure Travel Trade Association formed an alliance that will, among other things, deliver an introductory Adventure Travel Specialist workshop during the Oct. 16 to 18 Adventure Travel World Summit in Seattle. Helen Nodland, a certified travel counselor and founder of Nodland Travel Enterprises, will present the workshop. Introduced earlier this year by the Travel Institute, the Adventure Travel Specialist course was modeled after Virtuoso's Adventure Travel Consultant certification program. IN OTHER TRAVEL INSTITUTE news, the educational firm said every new enrollment in its Gay and Lesbian Travel Specialist Course will receive a complimentary one year subscription to either "Jane" or "Details" magazine. The gay and lesbian travel niche represents a $54 billion market. Enrollees in the course will learn how to identify gay and lesbian travelers; qualify new clients and determine certain travel preferences; identify the top gay destinations in the U.S. and abroad; build a presence in the gay and lesbian community; and create a gay-friendly environment. THROUGH THE PORTHOLE: Holland America Line in 2006 will debut an itinerary that calls at the new port of Saguenay, Quebec; offer more Eastern Canada/New England cruises; and add a second ship to the fall foliage cruise season. The Amsterdam will join the Maasdam to feature four 10-day cruises that highlight the new port in the Saguenay Fjord. Together, the two ships will sail a total of 22 cruises from April 28 to Oct. 7, 2006.
