VACATION RENTALS 4 AGENTS, part of the RCI Global Vacation Network, began offering virtual travel seminars on its Web site. Led by John Peters, vice president of travel trade and business development, the sessions will provide information on how retailers can earn up to 20% commission when booking with the company, the benefits of vacation rental accommodations and how to identify a potential vacation rental customer. Home-based agents can register to participate in one of the live seminars or they can elect to view a pre-recorded session. TRAVEL COUNSELLORS, a U.K.-based host agency that expanded to the U.S. last August, named Kim Sherrett recruitment manager to further broaden the ranks of home-based agents in the U.S. Sherrett had been director of agent relations for Travel Planners International, where she was responsible for analyzing customer and agent requirements, performing market assessments, coordinating market road-mapping, strategy integration and supporting executive presentations. In other news from the host agency, Travel Counsellors entered the South Africa market and plans to enter Australia.

SPIRIT VACATIONS rolled out Kids Stay Free specials, reduced rates and hotel value-added inclusions on packages to Orlando, Jamaica and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Plans include roundtrip air, hotel, transfers and taxes. A sample three-night stay at the Hawthorn Suites Universal Orlando features 15% off rates, free breakfasts and a cocktail reception. Rates are from $256 per person, based on departure city. Most plans must be booked by July 1 for travel through late September. Spirit Vacations said home-based and independent agents can make reservations through www.vaxvacationaccess.com/spiritvacations. After registering with their name, address, phone number and ARC or CLIA number, a confirmation will be sent by e-mail within 48 hours.

THROUGH THE PORT HOLE: Carnival Cruise Lines will base its newest and largest vessel, the 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor, in Southern California in March 2009. The ship will operate year-round, seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach, Calif., beginning March 29, 2009, following an inaugural schedule of European and Caribbean sailings. The Splendor will bring to five the number of Carnival ships based in Southern California.
