Travel Weekly's Home-based Agent E-letter: Sept. 3, 2007

VACATION.COM this fall will bring its educational and training sessions to members' desktops with webinars offered through the Agent Advancement Center. According to Steve Tracas, president and CEO, agents have the opportunity to participate in training events remotely with the use of their computer and telephone to listen, view and discuss topics in a real-time environment. Courses being offered are Introduction to AgentNet, Sept. 5 and 19; Amadeus Cruise, Sept. 12 and 26; Concierge Host Training for Vacation Vignettes, Sept. 12 and Nov. 14.; and VacationPort on Sept. 20 and Oct. 18. All courses are included as part of an agent's annual Vacation.com membership. Due to limited space, agents are urged to register in advance on www.agentnet.com.

CONEXION LIVE, an event immediately preceding the annual Jurni conference later this month, will feature a series of educational sessions for independent agents. The program, starting at noon on Sept. 26 at the Sheraton Arlington Hotel in Arlington, Texas, includes topics such as legal issues for at-home retailers, peer-to-peer mentoring and how to work effectively as a home-based agent. The Jurni conference begins Sept. 27 at the same hotel. Visit www.jurni.com for more information.

THE ASSOCIATION of Central New Jersey Travel Professionals will mark its 25th year in 2008 and will celebrate the milestone with an event next spring. Donna Carlin, first vice president, said the nonprofit group has 225 agent members and 53 vendor members. It holds educational seminars, some tied to CLIA courses, and sponsors monthly networking meetings. Carlin said the majority of members, 65%, are home-based or independent retailers; 20% are brick-and-mortar agents, and the remainder are suppliers. Carlin, who owns Stepping Out Travel Services, in Brick, N.J., said meetings are held in Ocean and Monmouth counties September through June, and that new members are welcome. The annual membership fee is $35. Agents interested in learning more can contact Carlin at (732) 920-0674.

DATEBOOK: The OSSN Fort Worth (Texas) Chapter will meet Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. for a meet and greet and planning session. The chapter will welcome OSSN agents as well as non-members at the Olive Garden restaurant behind Ridgmar Mall. There is no cost for the meeting (beyond the agent's own dinner). Jeff Grieder, OSSN's Midwest regional manager, will attend, and OSSN will conduct a random drawing for a free one-year membership. Agents should RSVP via e-mail to [email protected] or by phone, (817) 535-7077.
