PLAYA HOTELS & RESORTS said it closed on its previously announced purchase of five resorts, which are operated and branded by AMResorts and are located in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The properties in Mexico are: Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun, Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa, Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa and Sunscape Puerto Aventuras Riviera Maya.  As part of the arrangement with AMResorts, Playa plans to spend more than $25 million during the next 12 months to upgrade the five properties, which will retain their AMResorts branding and management.

ESPERANZA RESORT in Cabo San Lucas, operated by Auberge Resorts, announced the completion of a five-month, multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion. Guest room interiors were designed by Dallas-based Wilson & Associates and feature what the firm calls a sophisticated look evoking a luxurious Mexican seaside estate. Upping the room count to 57 are 10 new suites and a new penthouse with more than 2,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. Changes to the Spa at Esperanza include additional spa treatments and seven new treatment rooms, including a couples suite with outdoor shower.  Refurbished casitas feature new flat-screen TVs, free wireless Internet, iPod docking stations and upgraded bath amenities. UNITED VACATIONS launched a new travel agent incentive program for 2008 called the Elite by United Vacations that will focus on a new destination each month, and Mexico is a featured destination in January. As part of the promotion, every two bookings to Mexico or the Caribbean during the month of January will earn an agent a $25 Visa gift card. In addition, every 10 bookings will earn the agent two free roundtrip airline tickets. MEANWHILE, United Vacations is offering a New Years Resolution Sale through Feb. 14 that offers up to $200 off air-inclusive packages. Mexico is included in the promotion, which is valid for travel through Oct. 31. The promotional code NEWYEAR must be used when making a booking.  Savings start at $50 on packages priced from $1,200 and range to $200 on packages that cost $3,600 or more.

JETBLUE announced it will serve a 17th destination from Orlando when it launches daily nonstop service to Cancun on March 13. As a result, JetBlue said it will be the only low-cost carrier to offer daily, nonstop service between Orlando and Cancun. Fares will start at $49 each way. Flights from Orlando will depart daily at 8 a.m. and arrive in Cancun at 8:15 a.m. Return flights will depart Cancun at 9 a.m. and arrive in Orlando at 1:10 p.m. Flights will be operated a new Embraer 190 jet with room for 100 passengers.
