Travel Weekly's Mexico E-letter: Jan. 26 2005

SPIRIT said it will begin year-round Detroit-Cancun service April 8. Connecting service to Cancun through Detroit will include flights from New York (LaGuardia), Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The route will be Spirit's first nonstop international service from Detroit.

SERVICE DELAYED: Separately, Spirit told the Transportation Department (DOT) the airline must delay its planned launch of Fort Lauderdale-Mexico City service from this winter until late fall. The DOT's approval of the route was conditioned on Spirit starting the service by Jan. 15, so Spirit is asking the DOT for a waiver that would give it until Dec. 15. Spirit said it has to delay the launch because of "current industry conditions and the realities of its aircraft delivery schedule."  Spirit, waiting for up to 35 new Airbus aircraft, said it decided to accelerate the retirement of its MD80 aircraft because of the "dramatic and prolonged increase in fuel prices."

APPLE VACATIONS increased the frequency of its nonstop charters to Cancun from Buffalo, N.Y.; Richmond, Va.; Nashville; and Washington. In conjunction with the new Cancun service, the operator is offering air-hotel packages at the Oasis America Hotel. Seven-night packages from Buffalo and Richmond are priced from $799 per person, double, with departures every Sunday. The packages will use the Airbus A-320s of USA3000, Apple's sister airline. Service from Nashville is provided by Frontier Airlines with departures on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Three-night packages at the start at $499 per person, double. Air-only rates start at $99. Monday and Friday departures will begin in June from Washington using USA3000 aircraft. Air-inclusive packages will start at $499, while air-only prices start at $99.
