Travel Weekly's Mexico E-letter: June 18, 2008

MEXICO'S Ministry of Communications and Transportation on June 10 suspended the operations of budget airline Magnicharters, saying the carrier could not "provide sufficient guarantees for the safety of its passengers." In a statement, the ministry said the airline would have 90 days to resolve the problems identified and resume operations. The ministry said inspections by civil aviation authorities turned up maintenance problems and inadequate staff training. The ministry also said Magnicharters was in financial difficulty, which limited its ability to conduct proper maintenance and employee training. Prior to its suspension, Magnicharters operated between 16 domestic routes with a fleet of five Boeing 737s.
