Travel Weekly's Mexico E-letter: June 27, 2007

THE SAN JOSE del CABO AIRPORT will expand and receive a number of upgrades during the next three years in an effort to accommodate Los Cabos' tourism boom, airport and tourism officials announced. Airport improvements will include the addition of parallel landing strips to accommodate more arrivals and departures, reconfigured highway access to ease airport and road congestion, a fourth terminal building that will be united with a remodeled Terminal 3 and a new structure offering enhanced car rental facilities, shops and business services. The expansion is scheduled to begin in August, with the entire project slated for completion by early 2010.

MEANWHILE, THE LOS CABOS TOURISM BOARD has commissioned a "circulation study" of traffic in Los Cabos in an effort to improve flow during peak traffic periods and ease the destination's congestion woes. The study, which began on June 24, will include traffic counts of the major tourist destinations, including Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. The data will be used to formulate modifications to existing traffic patterns and come up with long-range solutions to Los Cabos' growing road congestion.
