Travel Weekly's Mexico E-letter: May 4, 2005

IN THE AIR: Cintra, parent company of competing Mexican airlines Aeromexico and Mexicana, reported net income of about $32.2 million for first-quarter (January to March) 2005 compared with a loss of $46 million in the same period last year. It was the company's first positive operating result in four years. Collective revenue grew by 14% for the quarter; load factors were up 2.2% to 63.4%; and yields grew 1.8%. Both Mexicana and Aeromexico added aircraft and increased load factors while cutting the number of destinations served. But while Mexicana trimmed employee ranks, Aeromexico added staff.
