ING CLARION PARTNERS LLC formed a joint venture with Mexican firms Grupo Carrousel and Operadora Punta Maroma to develop a $150 luxury resort in the Riviera Maya region. The project will include an 86-villa “ultraluxury” hotel built and operated by Capella Hotels and Resorts. Situated 15 miles north of Playa del Carmen, the 254-acre, mixed-use development will include the Capella Bahia Maroma Hotel, 127 residential units and an 18-hole Rees Jones golf course. The project will be built in four phases, starting with the hotel, which is scheduled to open next winter, and the golf course. The hotel will include a spa and three restaurants. The entire project is expected to be completed by June 2010.

MEXICO’S GRUPO POSADAS said it plans to open 15 hotels this year in Latin America, including 14 in Mexico under the One Hotels, Fiesta Inn and Aqua banners. The hotel company will open its second Aqua property in Mexico, Aqua Bosques in Mexico City, later this fall; Aqua Cancun reopened late last year after receiving a multimillion rebuild to repair damage done by Hurricane Wilma.  Aqua Bosques will include a spa and cater to upscale business and leisure travelers. By far the largest number of new hotels in Mexico this year will consist of business-category Fiesta Inn and economy-category One Hotels properties. No fewer than eight Fiesta Inn hotels will open in Mexico by the end of this year, including hotels in Chetumal, Cuernavaca and Morelia.

MEXICO CITY’S MARQUIS REFORMA HOTEL, which has always made a point of introducing guests to Mexican culture, launched the Mercado Mexicano program, offering a full-day, chef-led tour of the capital city’s farmer’s market and a cooking demonstration at one of the hotel’s restaurants. Geared to small groups of 10 to 12 guests, the program is priced at $200 per person through Dec. 31. Customers tour the capital city’s colonial-era Mercado San Juan and return to the hotel for a cooking class at Restaurante Pujol, one of Mexico City’s top restaurants. COMPASS AIRLINES, a subsidiary of Northwest Airlines, has begun operating daily, nonstop flights from Detroit to Monterrey, Mexico. To promote the new service, Northwest is offering up to 2,500 WorldPerks miles for select roundtrip tickets in first class and coach purchased by June 15 for travel by June 30. Compass currently serves 26 cities under service agreements with Northwest.
