Travel Weeklys Home-based Agent E-letter: April 24, 2006

A MINI-CARIBBEAN trade show is in the works at the New Jersey Chapter of OSSN. Featuring island officials and suppliers, the May 16 show will be staged in central New Jersey, at the East Grand Buffet in East Brunswick. No registration is necessary, and the event starts at 5 p.m. Among those attending: the St. Maarten/St. Martin Tourism Board, St. Kitts Tourism Board, Puerto Rico Tourism Board, Gutsy Women Travel, Travel Impressions, Windjammer Villa Rentals and the Cayman Islands Tourism Board.

ASIA BOUND: Host agency Joystar said it plans to expand its operations into Asia, and took the first step by hiring Charlie Lee to serve in a sales and marketing management position. Lee has management experience in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. William Alverson, Joystar CEO, said that the retail travel business representing the Asian community is highly fragmented and no dominant player exists. Joystar aims to be that dominant player.

The wholesaler already offers online bookings for Mexico and the Caribbean. As incentive to try the booking system, Apple will offer 17% commission for online bookings to Hawaii. Hotel partners also will offer incentives, Apple said.

IN YOUR POCKET: United Vacations extended its Travel Agent Booking Bonus for select packages to Latin America destinations when booked by June 30. Through the promotion, United Vacations will provide a $25 American Express Gift Cheque and 15% commission to travel agents for every air/land booking made (three nights or longer) to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico City, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
