We'll always have Paris

Was there a single, defining moment when Las Vegas sublimated its own identity in favor of taking on the guises of pretty much every other place on Earth? Well, whenever it started, last week's opening of Paris Las Vegas hotel and casino definitely made it official.

The joint's set piece is a replica of the Eiffel Tower that sort of shoots out of the all-important casino, but virtually every other Parisian landmark is represented, regardless of juxtaposition. And to show you just how Paris-like the place is, Catherine Deneuve, only the greatest living French icon, was hauled in for the opening to exclaim that it all seemed just like her hometown.

Right. Anyway, I think it's just great. If we can't have the Rat Pack, we can always have Paris, not to mention Rome, Venice, Egypt, New York, Sigfreid and Roy, all right on the strip. And unlike their counterparts, everything in Las Vegas is brand new, except, of course, Sigfreid and Roy. They're considered landmarks.
