Langham Hotel Hong Kong spruces up its accommodations

The Langham Hotel Hong Kong in the Tsim Sha Tsui area of Kowloon is in the midst a three-phase, $22 million renovation of its 495 guest units (469 rooms and 26 suites) to be completed in 2009.

The first phase of the renovation, the conversion of 150 rooms on four floors into Grand Rooms, will be finished in October. The effort includes a total redesign of room layouts, bathrooms and hard and soft furnishings as well as the addition of 37-inch plasma TVs and Nortel IP phones.

While guest rooms toured on a recent stay had a traditional upscale feel, the reinvented Grand Rooms will add what Langham management termed "sumptuous contemporary design" elements, such as silk drapes, throw pillows, gold-leaf artwork, antique photography of Tsim Sha Tsui, wool carpets set into hardwood floors and wall paneling of burled timber and textured leather.

Bathrooms are being overhauled to lend an in-room spa ambience and will feature deep soaking tubs; separate, glass-enclosed shower stalls; and floor-to-ceiling marble.

The second and third phases of the guest room renovation will begin in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

On the menu

What won't change is the dining for which the Langham Hotel Hong Kong is known. The property remains home to several drinking and dining venues deemed among Hong Kong's best, in hotels or out.

Premier restaurant T'ang Court serves what has been billed as Hong Kong's finest Cantonese cuisine, while the Bostonian, a favorite with business travelers, specializes in seafood and steaks.

Less formal dining options include L'Eclipse, an open-kitchen eatery serving international cuisine, and the Main Street Deli, a New York-style establishment serving huge sandwiches and burgers.

Palm Court, featuring European decor, plush sofas and large armchairs, serves afternoon tea and snacks and drinks throughout the day. In the evening, Palm Court hosts live musical performances.

On the top floor of the hotel, guests have access to a rooftop swimming pool with a sun deck as well as a boutique fitness center that is open 24 hours.

The five-star Langham Hotel Hong Kong, owned and operated by Langham Hotels International, is the city's sole member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

Langham Hotels also operates the 665-room Langham Place Hotel in Kowloon's Mongkok district.
