Agents say theyre sticking with their GDSs ... for now

Art Pfenning GDSs are in no danger of being abandoned in the near future, according to a TW poll of 410 travel agents, but the results of our survey should be watched closely in the future to examine emerging trends.

Nine in 10 agents (91%) say they are not considering switching GDSs in the next 12 months, but one in five (18%) are considering a GDS alternative. Exactly which GDS alternative agents would consider switching to remains open. Eighteen percent (18%) mention G2 SwitchWorks, and 8% mention ITA Software, but 59% say they are undecided.

A third (33%) believe that a GDS alternative will completely replace their current GDS at some point, while 38% say they are undecided about that.

Agents appear frustrated by what is perceived as limited GDS inventory. A decided majority of those polled (72%) say that what is available on the Internet does not match what is available on the GDS.

Agents who are already using alternative GDSs say that about a fifth (18.8%) of their business is currently processed through these alternative GDSs. This percentage is unlikely to change significantly (19%) into 2006, according to the poll. These percentages will be interesting to monitor over the next few years.
