Aruba's Natural Bridge crashes to the sea

ORANJESTAD, Aruba -- The Natural Bridge, one of Arubas most treasured and photographed attractions, collapsed and fell into the ocean Sept. 2 after centuries of pounding by the surf.

The rock bridge, which was 100 feet long and 25 feet high, was formed by coral limestone carved from thousands of years of pounding waves and strong winds on Arubas jagged northern coast. It became one of the most recognizable tourist attractions in the Caribbean, and hundreds of visitors walked across it each year.

Although locals and tourist alike are saddened by the loss of the Natural Bridge, this is part of the continually changing evolution of nature, according to a statement from the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA).

Aruba does have seven other picturesque natural bridges in addition to a bevy of diverse landmarks, the ATA added.

Although arrangements for a tribute to the bridge are not yet final, the ATA is discussing several plans, one of which could include Web site submissions by visitors of their favorite Natural Bridge photos and memories.
