The Bahamas will host the Miss Universe Pageant, scheduled to air live from the Atlantis Resort on Aug. 30.

While the pageant is a one-time event, the Bahamas will serve as the backdrop for a month's worth of activities leading up to the televised event.

"We will look for events that will add value to the Bahamas brand and showcase the diversity of the destination," said Vincent Vanderpool Wallace, minister of tourism.

Atlantis, which laid off 800 workers in December, may rehire some of the workers on a temporary basis while the 80 beauty queens and their entourages are in residence.
