Bay Gardens Beach Hotel opens on St. Lucia

The 72-room Bay Gardens Beach Hotel on Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia is open for business.

The resort is the centerpiece of the Bay Garden Resorts chain on St. Lucia, which includes the 87-room Bay Gardens Hotel and the 32-room Bay Gardens Inn.

Facilities at the new resort include the Hi Tide beachside restaurant, the Lo Tide deli and snack bar and a wedding gazebo. 

A Mediterranean-style restaurant will open later this summer.

The resort said a kids' club, a fitness center and dive facilities will be ready by December.

Sedona eyes Caribbean

Sedona Resorts, a hotel management and development company based in Sedona, Ariz., launched two projects in the Caribbean: Crab Cay and Kittitian Hill.

Crab Cay is a 180-acre island located off Great Exuma in the Bahamas; Kittitian Hill is on the north side of St. Kitts.

Both projects include resort and residential components. Each development will have a boutique hotel and a destination spa. There will be a golf course at Kittitian Hill and a marina for yachts up to 300 feet long at Crab Cay. No timetable has been announced for the projects.

Kaluche named CHA president

Enrique de Marchena Kaluche from the Dominican Republic is the new president of the Caribbean Hotel Association. Kaluche succeeds Peter Odle of Barbados and will serve a two-year term, 2008 to 2010.

Kaluche, a lawyer, is the second Dominican to hold that post. The first was Simon Suarez in 2002.

Frenchman's Reef update

The two-year, $25 million renovation at the 479-room Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort on St. Thomas will be completed later this summer.

Guest room upgrades include new bedding, mahogany and granite furniture and new bathroom amenities.

The 96-unit Morning Star complex added flat-screen TVs in guest rooms, while the four bilevel suites at Frenchman's Reef were renovated at a cost of $100,000 per suite.

Public areas have been enhanced, including the Windows on the Harbour restaurant, which got new carpeting and booths.

More lift for Grand Cayman

Cayman Airways, which operates nonstop service three days a week between New York and Grand Cayman, will up its frequency next winter.

The schedule calls for four weekly flights from Nov. 9 to Jan. 6, three from Jan. 7 to Feb. 7, and five from Feb. 8 to April 20.

The schedule will go back to three flights on April 21.

Ritz-Carlton targets groups

The four Ritz-Carlton resorts in the Caribbean (Rose Hall, Jamaica; Grand Cayman; San Juan; and St. Thomas) are offering a Summer Escape group plan until Oct. 30.

The package is based on 30 rooms or more per night. Rates start at $229 per room, per night, double, in a gardenview room at the Ritz-Carlton, Rose Hall.

Rates cover room, tax, service charges, resort fees, meeting space, a spa treatment and a 10% discount on catered food and beverage.
