BON-DiveWhat do people throw in the water?

A lot, according to a group of 40 divers and snorkelers who took part in Bonaire's recent underwater cleanup effort of the island's commercial South Pier, also known as the Customs Pier.

Items recovered during the two-hour dive: 13 pieces of rubber, 85 beer bottles, 55 pieces of plastic, 49 metal cans, 34 pieces of fishing line, 19 articles of clothing, three shoes, four flip-flops, four lengths of pipe, one packet of ketchup, four pairs of underwear, nine lengths of rope, one motor, two iron chains, two knives, a car battery and a fishing rod.

The next quarterly cleanup, which will mark the 10-year anniversary of the project, is set for Sept. 20 in conjunction with World Cleanup Day and Bonaire's Love Our Planet Week.
