During the winter season, Cuba said it drew a record 809,937 vistors, a 2% increase from a year earlier.
In 2008, Cuba welcomed more than 2.3 million visitors, up 9% over 2007 and second only to the Dominican Republic’s 3.9 million visitors last year.
Canada is Cuba’s main source of tourists, followed by the U.K., Italy, Spain and Germany. Growth markets appear to be Mexico and Argentina, Cuba said.
The Dominican Republic’s tourist numbers slipped this winter; February figures showed a 6.5% drop in visitors.
Between July 2008 and March 2009, the Dominican Republic said it had 2.5 million foreign visitors, 145,000 fewer than in the same nine-month period spanning 2007-2008.
