Arrivals in the Dominican Republic in 2008 totaled 3.4 million visitors, which represented a 1.4% increase over 2007 numbers, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

U.S. visitors held steady for the fourth year in a row at more 1 million arrivals. North American visitors outpaced those from Europe by 24%.

Punta Cana on the island's east coast was the most popular destination for all visitors. Its international airport recorded 1.9 million arrivals.
