Travelers arriving by air in the Dominican Republic grew to 2.9 million visitors from January through July, up 7.2% over the same period in 2011.

The U.S. continues to be the top source market, according to data from the Central Bank, which compiles arrivals statistics for the destination.

Other markets showing growth include Russia, Canada and Venezuela.

Punta Cana is the leading airport of entry, handling 62% of foreign tourist arrivals, followed by Las Americas in Santo Domingo with 20%, Puerto Plata with 10%, Cibao (Santiago) with 5% and La Romana with 3%.

Close to 65% of tourists visiting the D.R. are between the ages of 21 and 49, according to the Central Bank.
