Hot springs to get much-needed healing of their own

Puerto Rico's thermal pools of Coamo Springs near Ponce on the island's south coast are about to get some much-needed attention, thanks to an investment of $2.6 million from the Puerto Rico Tourism Co.

For years the hot springs-fed pools, located along the Coamo River, were visited by locals and tourists for their spa-like, healing qualities.

Legend has it that the springs are the source of the fountain of youth sought by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon.

However, in recent years, poor access and lack of maintenance and funds led to the deterioration of the public facilities at the springs.

Using the PRTC funds, the municipality of Coamo will refurbish the area; build a new pool, restaurant, activities area and a massage center; add a building for bathrooms, lockers, changing rooms and offices; pave the access roads; and add ramps and rails for the handicapped.

Construction is slated to begin in October with completion in 18 months.
