Hurricane Earl strengthened into a Category 3 storm Monday afternoon, packing winds of 125 mph as it passed near the U.S. and British Virgin Islands where airports, schools and some government offices are closed.
Hurricane warnings are in effect for the northern Caribbean, where heavy rains and storm surges were forecast. Earl is expected to strengthen overnight.
Meanwhile, LIAT resumed some services from Antigua to destinations south of the island.
Earl could affect areas in the U.S. from the Carolinas to Cape Cod over Labor Day weekend. Outer bands are likely to hit North Carolina beginning Thursday, causing large swells and rip currents.
