Major carriers are waiving change fees for passengers traveling to Bermuda as Hurricane Leslie is on course to hit the island over the weekend.

The forecast track brings the storm within 40 miles of the island on Sunday, Sept. 9 as a potential Category 2 hurricane with winds exceeding 90 mph, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.

Officials at Bermuda's Emergency Measures Organization said plans were in place and all emergency services were ready for Leslie's impact.

The hurricane already is bringing rough surf and rip currents to parts of the Caribbean and the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Michael escalated to hurricane status on Wednesday as the seventh hurricane of the Atlantic season. The storm remains well east of any land mass at present.
