InsightThe Radisson Blu Resort, Marina & Spa St. Martin reopens Dec. 15 following a seven-month closure for a $53 million renovation project.

The 252-room property in Anse Marcel in the northwest corner of St. Martin (on the French side of the Dutch-French island) opened under the Radisson flag in December 2008, following an $80 million conversion from the former L’Habitacion de Lonvilliers.

Conversion to Radisson’s upscale Blu brand took place in summer 2010, following further investments in the property.

The latest property improvements include installation of new air-conditioning, electrical and water systems; new tiles in the marina; new menus in the two restaurants; landscaping; and the launch of butler service in the 63 suites, according to Jean Marc Jalbert, general manager.

“The staff underwent 500 hours of intense training that covered resort standards, guest issues, computer skills and an overview of each department at the resort so that employees understand what other employees are doing,” Jalbert said.

Radisson Blu, St. MartinAlso upgraded was transfer service by resort launch from a dock near the airport. “We have a $380,000 catamaran that transports up to 20 guests and their luggage at a time,” Jalbert said. “The transfer is $50 per person each way, including beverages, for the 25-minute boat ride.”

New activities and packages have been added, including hiking on trails behind the resort, rum tastings, spa treatments, live entertainment, theme nights, wedding and honeymoon programs and family activities.

A new position was created to work with agents and operators; heading up that aspect of the resort is Dennis Herron, director of leisure, tours and travel.

The resort offers WiFi throughout; Internet access is complimentary in the guestrooms.

More than 60% of Radisson Blu’s market is from the U.S., primarily the East Coast, with the balance from France and other European countries as well as South America.

Jalbert reported that the holiday is nearly sold out, and first-quarter bookings “are very strong.”

Winter season rates start at $550 per room, per night, double, with breakfast.
