Peter Island Resort & Spa is the first resort in the British Virgin Islands to install two wind turbines to harness the power of wind for the property’s energy needs.
"We’ve studied the idea for years. The new state-of-the-art turbines are environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, which make them an ideal option for this geographic location,” said David Van Andel, CEO of the private island resort, which is a 30-minute boat ride from Beef Island Airport on Tortola, BVI.
The turbines are monitored by a computer program which adjusts output based on activity and tracks energy consumption. Fuel consumption is expected to decrease by at least 25%, according to Van Andel.
Van Andel said the common electrical outages experienced in the Caribbean will be eliminated because the turbines allow the resort to deliver a more consistent electrical supply.
