Carnival Cruise Line has pulled out of Mazatlan indefinitely in the wake of recent security incidents.
The cruise line called the move "a precautionary measure" and said it is working with the Mexican government and local officials "to review their plans to improve security in all of the main tourist areas."
Carnival plans to return to Mazatlan "once we are comfortable with their plans and implementation."
Alternate itineraries for Carnival Splendor's seven-day cruises call for Mazatlan to be replaced by an additional visit to Cabo San Lucas.
On the Carnival Spirit's nine-day sailing March 11, Mazatlan and Ensenada will be replaced with a second call in Cabo and a call at Manzanillo.
On Carnival Spirit's seven-day cruise March 20, Mazatlan will be replaced by a second day in Cabo.
Carnival's decision to cancel calls in Mazatlan comes just days after the Mazatlan Tourism Trust reached out to travel agents, assuring them the city "is widely regarded as one of the safest destinations in Mexico."
