Disney Cruise Line's upcoming ship, the Disney Wish, will feature its first mobile app-based experience, Disney Uncharted Adventure. The interactive game is designed for full-family participation.

The experience is used with the Play Disney Parks app, which turns the mobile device into a "spyglass" tool that incorporates the worlds of Moana, Tiana, Peter Pan, Nemo and other characters. The spyglass becomes the key to unlocking adventures, solving puzzles and conquering quests, Disney said.

It is the first Disney Cruise experience that can be started at home. Before a Disney Wish sailing, the app will reveal a greeting from Captain Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse, who will help guests prepare for the journey by highlighting the role of the night sky in seafaring and the "wishing star" that lights the way.

Once aboard, passengers will use their "spyglasses" to reveal never-before-seen views of the stars above, where constellations take shape as recognizable characters from Disney and Pixar stories. The wishing star will suddenly shatter, and Captain Minnie will need guests to help navigate the ship to uncharted worlds to find its missing pieces.

"While guests will need a mobile device to play, this isn't a traditional mobile gaming experience," said Davey Feder, software product manager for Walt Disney Imagineering. "This is a heads-up, active experience that can be played with family and friends. The magic will happen all around the ship. The spyglass is not where the adventure takes place -- it's just the tool that brings the ship to life, opening portals into new worlds and allowing guests to interact with them."

On the ship, guests will be prompted to seek artwork, signs and props that are transformed by the spyglass to bring the characters and settings to life all around them.

"Guests might admire a beautiful painting today without realizing that, hiding right beneath the surface, there's a hoard of mischievous Kakamora from the world of Moana just waiting to escape and wreak havoc on the ship," Feder said. "A digital menu board might showcase what's for lunch in the afternoon, but later it will host a cooking lesson in Tiana's own kitchen."

Disney said the adventure is being developed with flexibility and customization in mind, so that guests can choose when and how to play. If they don't complete every quest, guests can still enjoy its finale, while others can choose to play more than once.

Families can play together on up to six devices at once, or team up on only one or two devices.

The Disney Wish will make its debut in summer 2022.
