EasyCruise taps Gwyn Hughes as newest CEO

Gwyn Hughes was appointed CEO of EasyCruise, the no-frills cruise line, effective immediately.

Hughes was executive director of P&O Cruises from 2000-2003; prior to that, he served as managing director of P&O until 2000. Most recently, he ran his own strategy and communications consultancy firm.

According to EasyCruise, Hughes and his management team will manage the day-to-day aspects of the business, which include refurbishing the fleet with the new EasyCruise design; installing the new, more upscale food and beverage outlets in the fleet; and preparing for a possible initial public offering, or alternatively, a partial sale, in the years to come.

As the other players in the industry continue to focus on older passengers, I will make sure that EasyCruise continues to shake up the industry with their innovative business plan and unique product in order to grow the market by bringing in young cruisers, said Hughes.

Chairman Stelios Haji-Ioannou said the arrival of Hughes will allow him to focus on the other 15 EasyGroup businesses, while retaining his position at EasyCruise.

Now that EasyCruise is past its pilot phase and is established as a business it deserves a full time CEO, Haji-Ioannou said.

EasyCruise also appointed Louise Reece to senior vice president for itineraries and shore activities. Reece will be responsible for all negotiations with ports and port agents and maximizing revenue from passenger shore activities. Based in Miami, Reece worked for 10 years with Windjammer Barefoot Cruises.
