NEW YORK -- The underwriters of the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) bond held by bankrupt Commodore Cruise Line have named a Tampa, Fla.-based law firm to process claims from Commodore passengers who were scheduled to embark from U.S. ports before Commodore's December 2000 shutdown.

Amwest Surety Insurance Co. and Swiss Reinsurance America Corp. retained Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick on April 3 to handle passenger claims.

Claim forms, including filing instructions, can be obtained by telephone at 800-677-7661, ext. 2202, by fax at 813-229-1660 or via e-mail at [email protected], Shumaker's coordinating center.

Shumaker also will post a Web site to provide updates regarding the filing process. When the site goes live, the Web address will be www.commodore.slk.com.

As for reimbursements, Amwest officials, in a statement, said "While it has yet to be determined as to what extent Commodore will be able to meet its obligations, based on our experience we encourage [passengers] who paid by means of a credit card immediately request the card issuer to cancel [the cruise charges]." Furthermore, the bond cover only the cruise portion of a passenger's payment and excludes air transportation and other vacation-related charges.
