The Port of Galveston remained closed on Aug. 30, but sea conditions are rapidly improving, the port said on its Facebook page

"Seas are currently running 4 to 6 feet at the jetties," the posting said. "These conditions are expected to further improve throughout the day and overnight."

Cruise ships have not docked at the port since it was closed on Aug. 25 in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Harvey.

Officials from the port, port pilots, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard are in the process of assessing the waterways and facilities for the eventual opening of the Galveston ship channel. No timetable was given for completion.
