A 30-year veteran in cruising and luxury hospitality, Ungerer's resume includes a stint from 2012 to 2015 as president of Carnival Corp.'s German brand Aida Cruises. In 2015 he was named COO of shared services at Carnival Asia, based in Shanghai.

Ungerer, 53, is an Austrian citizen. He will report to MSC executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago.

Earlier this year, MSC confirmed a $2.3 billion order for four luxury cruise ships to be built by Fincantieri, with the first to be delivered by spring 2023. The remaining three are planned to come into service one per year over the following three years through 2026.
