A new cruise tax is coming to Greece on July 1, according to reports. The rate will be 20 euros per passenger in Mykonos and Santorini for the summer season from July 1 to Sept. 30.
The tax will decrease to 12 euros in October, fall to 4 euros from November through March, rise again to 12 euros from April to June, then return to the peak summer rate in July.
Other cruise destinations in Greece will charge 5 euros in the peak summer season, 3 euros in the fall and spring, and 1 euro in the winter.
Greece Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis shared plans for the new tax in September and attributed it to overtourism in certain destinations, Reuters reported.
"Cruise shipping has burdened Santorini and Mykonos, and this is why we are proceeding with interventions," he said at the time.
