Port Canaveral opens to large vessels

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Port Canaveral reopened its harbor over the weekend to large ships for the first time since Hurricane Frances stormed through the area earlier this month.

The port said it could accommodate ships with a draft of as much as 28 feet -- which allowed the Carnival Glory and the Fantasy to resume turnarounds there last weekend. Disney Cruise Line also returned to the port; the Disney Magic performed a turnaround on Saturday, and the Disney Wonder docked in on Sunday.

Port Canaveral had remained closed longer than the three other Florida ports shuttered during the storm -- Miami, Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and Tampa -- because officials were concerned that the storm had moved some of the channel markers or silted in some of the channel.
