Port Everglades entered the design phase of a $35 million project to renovate four terminals for cruise lines owned by Carnival Corp.

Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises sail year-round from Port Everglades.

The upgrades are part of an agreement finalized a year ago between Carnival Corp. and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the governing body for Port Everglades.

In return for the port's investment, Carnival Corp. will deliver a minimum of 25.5 million passengers sailing to or from the facility during the next 15 years.

Following the renovations, the four terminals each will have two passenger loading bridges, separate and larger baggage halls, improved ground transportation areas and energy-efficient technologies, the port said.
