Possible damage keeps Port Canaveral closed to boat traffic

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Concerns about channel depth and buoys that may have drifted during Hurricane Frances are keeping Port Canaveral closed to vessel traffic.

Port officials said they werent sure when the port would be reopened to boat traffic. Results on a channel survey that would determine if any dredging is needed would hopefully be available Sept. 9, a spokeswoman said.

Stan Payne, CEO of the Canaveral Port Authority, said in a news conference that there were two critical components: getting the navigational aides in place and making sure the channel depth is what it should be.

Two Coast Guard cutters were en route to the port Sept. 8 to work on repositioning the channel navigational aides.
