Princess cancels 2nd sailing on Star for investigation, repairs

Princess Cruises cancelled the April 3 voyage of the fire-damaged Star Princess, saying in a statement that additional out of service time is required for the vessel.

About 100 cabins were damaged as a result of the fire, which broke out in the early morning of March 23 as the ship sailed from Grand Cayman to Jamaica. One person died following cardiac arrest; 11 people were injured.

Passengers on the cancelled cruise will receive a full refund, plus a future cruise credit equal to 25% of the cruise fare.

Meanwhile, the U.K.s Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it would lead the investigation into the Star Princess fire at the invitation of authorities from Bermuda, the vessels flag-state.

The U.K. agency said its leading a team that includes authorities from the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Transportation Safety Board and fire investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
