Princess moves May christenings after ship-sinking disaster

Princess Cruises has altered the dates and locations of the christening ceremonies for the Emerald Princess and the Royal Princess, which were to take place in Santorini, Greece, out of respect for the sinking of Louis Cruises' Sea Diamond off Santorini this month, Princess said.

Princess had been planning to name both ships in a single ceremony in Santorini on May 12.

The Emerald Princess will now be named on May 13 in Athens. The new date and location for the Royal Princess' christening will be announced shortly, Princess said.

The Sea Diamond scraped volcanic rock with its hull just outside Santorini's harbor and began taking on water; it sank April 6. The disaster apparently cost the lives of two passengers.

"Given the great shock and sadness this incident has caused, and out of the respect for those affected, we have decided that it would not be appropriate to continue with the celebrations we had planned in Santorini," said Alan Buckelew, Princess' president.
