SAN JUAN -- As promised in April, the Ports Authority in Puerto Rico increased cruise fees from $10.30 to $13.25 per passenger earlier this month.

Fearing a fallout in cruise activity as a result of the fee hike, the Puerto Rico Tourism Co. is working with various cruise lines and the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association to develop incentive plans to keep Puerto Rico competitive as a home port and as a port of call.

Puerto Rico welcomed more than 1.2 million cruise passengers last year, up 2.6% over 2002.
