MIAMI -- Royal
Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will be the next
cruise lines to offer cell phone connectivitiy at sea.
In fact, Royal
Caribbean already is offering passengers on the Majesty of the Seas
the option to make cell phone calls in international waters.
Meanwhile, the cell phone program will launch on the Navigator of
the Seas and Celebritys Summit in the next few weeks and on other
ships throughout 2005.
The lines parent
company Royal Caribbean Cruises struck a deal with Wireless
Maritime Services (a joint venture between Cingular Wireless and
Maritime Telecommunications Network) to provide technology that
enables passengers to make and receive calls on their own cell
phones (if that phone has GSM technology), at their own telephone
numbers. Passengers will be billed by their own wireless carrier at
roaming rates set by the carrier.
Island Cruises, a
joint venture between RCCL and First Choice Holidays in the U.K.,
introduced the mobile-call option earlier this year; in August,
Norwegian Cruise Line said it would roll out cell phone
capabilities on its ships this year and next.
