The first two Carnival Cruise Line ships powered by
liquefied natural gas (LNG) and devoted to the North American market will be
supplied with fuel by Shell.
Carnival expects to put the two 5,200-passenger ships in
service in 2020 and 2022.
The companies announced they will be fueled through Shell's
LNG Bunker Barge, marine fuel that will be available at ports along the
southern U.S. East Coast.
The two new Carnival vessels will be fully powered by LNG
both while in port and at sea -- an industry first. They will have lower
emissions of pollutants such as nitrous oxide and sulfur dioxide, and burn more
efficiently than petroleum-based fuel.
Shell is already working with Aida Cruises, a Carnival sister
line in Germany. Since last year It has supplied fuel for the AidaPrima, the
first cruise ship in the world to use LNG while in port.
