Two Carnival Cruise Line guests drowned on Aug. 15 at Celebration Key, the cruise line's new private destination in the Bahamas, according to Bahamian authorities and the cruise line.
The incidents occurred within three hours of each other, the first in the ocean and the second in a lagoon pool, according to Grand Bahama police.
A 79-year-old man was found unresponsive while snorkeling in the ocean shortly before noon, police said.
Shortly after that, at 2:30 p.m., a 74-year-old woman became unresponsive in one of two freshwater lagoon pools at the destination.
Rescue efforts
In both instances, lifeguards assisted the guests from the water and attempted to revive them with CPR, the police said.
Both guests were from the U.S., authorities said, but they had arrived at Celebration Key with family on separate vessels, one on the Mardi Gras and the other aboard the Carnival Elation, a Carnival spokesman said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families, and our Care Team is providing assistance," the spokesman said.
Celebration Key opened on July 19. The cruise line is anticipating 2 million visitors in its first year.
