This expedition ship was built in 1982 as the Midnatsol for Norwegian Coastal Express service. It was enlarged seven years later.

For a short time it became the Lyngen before being taken on by Lindblad and completely rebuilt from a passenger-cargo long-distance ferry to a highly sophisticated expedition ship in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, into the National Geographic Explorer. It re-entered service in June 2008.
